Haller-ween

Hey y'all!
I hope everyone had wonderful weekends.
I have a number of posts coming up, so here is the first.

Last Thursday night, was my school's halloween "party".

Two things:

1. I don't really get into Halloween. Sorry
Besides watching Hocus Pocus like I did when I was little (um, btw, that movie is almost 20 years old..say, what?),
I don't really do anything for it. I do love Autumn, but more the pretty colors and pumpkins and less the blackish ghouls.

2. Law school people DO get into Halloween.
I'm not so sure it's a love for Halloween specifically as it is a love for any excuse to party. Work hard, play harder.
Either way, I wanted to go to the party to hang out with friends, and needed a costume.

Another thing, if I do wear a costume, there are some requirements:
1. Homemade
2. Inexpensive
3. Comfortable
4. Non-slooty
5. Comical

So I started searching on the internet for some ideas, consulted my friends, and stumbled upon a winner!

Gosh, I could watch this movie a million times.

So, here it is:

$1 red cap, $4 fake beard, and my favorite pair of norts = Forrest Gump
Pictured here with Linds, the zombie beauty queen

Oh, and Kristi came to visit, and accompanied me as Jennayyyyyy
This was right after my friend Marshall said, "Your hair even looks like his!"
Boys.
Bless.
Although, the guy has a point.

The party was fun. The band was great.
But seriously, what do they do with that hair the other 164 hours of the week?

And I stayed up past 11!!

Overall, a fun night!

Hope you have a great Halloween, however you choose to spend it!

Today.

Today

is Friday.

And it's going to be a great day.

Happy Friday, people!

I get to hang out with friend Kristi who came into town last night.

We are going to grab coffee at JCup..

and go to class (she is observing to see that law skewl is kewl)

have a lunch date (BBQ, perhaps?)

and

then stop at the outlets on the way to Atlanta.

Kristi is going to Atlanta for the Clemson-Tech game.

I, however, must ramble on.

Because...

today is Friday.

And I am going to see my _____.

Have great weekend! I love y'all!

Simple Joys.

Hi everyone!

Today has been a super busy one for this gal!
I know all my other 2L friends are feeling the same! Whew..

However, I was happy to come home from school and relax with some simple joys:

1. Package from my sister!

Loved seeing newest pics of my brother who is serving in Afghanistan (prayers appreciated!), newest artwork of my sweet niece and nephew, and of course Keri's baking puts Martha to shame! Thank you, love!

2. "Baked cookies" scented candle

Two reasons I love my newest candle:
18-hour jar on clearance for $2.50
 IT SMELLS LIKE BAKED COOKIES

3. A big pot of veggie chili in the crockpot!

Another one of my "invented" meals: kidney beans, black beans, diced tomatoes (all undrained), frozen corn, leftover butternut squash cubes and limas from other dinners that I wanted to get rid of (don't you love that about soups??), garlic powder, packet of low-sodium chili seasoning... on low for 6ish.

Topped with sour cream and cheese. Whole fat. Sorry I'm not sorry.

Despite it's lack of formality, Eleanor and I enjoyed two bowls each. THAT good, people.

So, make it today if you're an income-less law student who is busy during the day and gets hungry after school and running and wants something easy, warm, filling, and nutritious!

Or if you're just a regular person who wants something easy, warm, filling, and nutritious!
You can obviously alter the random stuff I threw in there! Or leave out the cheese! It makes lots!

4. Apple Cider and Bible study with my favorite law gals

Thank you sweet mama for all the K-cups!
TWO items of snail mail in one day? I hardly knew how to contain myself.

After dinner and squealing over my packages, my friends came over for Wednesday night small group. I am SO thankful for this time! Tonight we studied Mark 2 and how the friends of the paralyzed man sacrificed to get their friend to Christ. What would that look like in my life? Am I going out of my way to show Christ's love or merely going through the motions? Hmmmm...praying big prayers for the former!

So yea, that's been my evening so far!
Hopefully I'm not too boring for y'all. :)

Speaking of!
Off to read for CivPro....

At least I can do so with the scents of baked goods in the air! :)

Love to each of you!

God is great, Clemson is good, and I'm still pretty crazy.

This past weekend, as well-advertised beforehand, I went to my favorite place in the world.

I figured out on Thursday night that I had not been away from school for a whole month.

For me, that is far too long.

So Friday after Wills, I literally ran out of school.

I jumped in Betty, who was pre-packed, and I drove down (er, up?) 129 blaring my newest fave on the way to see beautiful Clemson and my beautiful friends.

I needed to get away.

I needed some restoration.

Away from the papers, and the briefs, and the dramatic, overly stressed, law-schoolers.

I sang my little heart out to Jesus! I thanked him for the beautiful day, the changing colors of the leaves, the cool air, the sunshine, the chance for a "vacation".

I arrived in TigerTown, and oh, I should have pulled over and taken a picture, but was in too much of a hurry to see everyone!

The bright blue sky, the orange trees, the Blue Ridge in the background..glorious.

From here, I met up with my sweet friend Kristi, and we went downtown and got yummy iced coffee! Love Friday afternoon fun with a good friend, and everyone in their orange is always a fun sight!
And of course, I fell in love with this soft shirt at TTG:

Clemson is SO good. And I am a size medium. Cough cough.

After enjoying the beautiful day with Kristi, I spent the evening with Jessie and Sarah Beth eating some chips and salsa (soooo happy), talking, and just hanging out!

Saturday, oh Saturday! Gameday fun!!

Noon game = early breakfast tailgate!

The day consisted of:

Hanging out with the Carlson clan and Ash (hey, y'all!)

Walking all over campus and meeting up with more friends...
Steph and Dani love!

Cuties Meredith, Hannah, and Kristi!

Then, thanks to Steph, enjoying the game, from the trustee box. :)

Woooooo Tigers are 8-0, y'all!

Sunday was equally amazing.

Newspring church. So much love!

Job 42:12 "The LORD blessed the latter part of Job’s life more than the former part...."

Then hangout time and dinner with the ladies of 612.

I made this, and you should make it sometime too!

Monday, I headed back to school, but not before visiting my sweet class at PHS (Hi, Burdette!)!

Now I'm back and ready for week 10 out of 14 for classes! :)

I hope y'all have great weeks!
Love- L

This afternoon.

I'll be on the road to my favorite place on the planet.

Where the Blue Ridge yawns its greatness...

Happy weekend, Friends!

Oh heyyy.

Happy Tuesday!

Whew,  it's a busy one for me today!
So just a few quick things:

My weekend was...eh.
Just managed to get lots of schoolwork done and watch my tigers! Woo!

First appellate brief: Done.
Ah, it feels so good!
Cannot wait to turn it in in an hour. :)

Military Law presentation after that.
In the military?
Want to know your trial rights under the UCMJ?
I'm ya girl.

I have to write a paper for my seminar class about "the lawyer-statesman".
Which is basically an ideal that describes a lawyer who is ethical and public-spirited.
As my teacher is very open to any kind of paper, I couldn't help but pick this fella:

Plus the idea of citing an actual enjoyable/my favorite book in a law school assignment is super exciting to me.
Any other Atticus fans out there?
What are some reasons you love him?

Last night, at Zumba, I had a "Pavlov" moment.
I remember studying classical conditioning in my psychology classes in undergrad.
(The dogs with the tuning fork)
But last night, it really hit home.
Everytime Zumba class starts, I am thinking "Yayy, love a fun switch-up to my regular workouts"
Cue the Latin music, and it's like, "Mmmm I could really go for some chips and queso right now"

...um yea, thanks for letting me confess that.

I recently started following this awesome blog.
So encouraging!
Especially for us gals.

I hope you all have had a great start to your week!

A Little Out of Era.

Morning!

I believe I've mentioned to y'all before, but I love my CivPro professor.

Witty, Classy, Interactive..

But sometimes, in class, she refers to pop culture that we have no idea about.

Today for example, when talking about lovely (and 5 page long) FRCP 26.

"What is the first thing you have to think about when looking to draft discovery, especially involving an expert?"
Non-response from the students at 8:45am
"Ok ok, think about Carly Simon, y'all."
Once again, non-response from a group of 70, average age 24.5.

And of course there's me.
Attempting to scramble for the answer.

At first the thought process looked like,
"Ummmm. privilege?....consent?...authority?"

And then SHE shows up on the scene...

And it's like,
"Um, someone walked into a party??"
"Someone not knowing the discovery was about them..don't you, don't you?"
"James Taylor?"
"What the hay does vanity have to do with litigation discovery??!!"

Apparently I was way off.
And apparently, unbeknownst to my 23 year old brain, CS had more than one song!

So what is it you first have to think of before drafting your discovery?

Thank you for your attention to this matter-
That weird 2L

Ps- the only reason I knew who Carly Simon was:

Fun fall weekends.

Hey everyone!

Hope y'all had a great weekend!

Mine was full of all things Fall :)

Oh, look who showed up!
My favorite tall drink of water/brave pumpkin insides scooper!

We carved a pumpkin
...Clemson style, of course. :)

And I made these little darlings:
(forgot to take a pic, so used the one from the website)

Nom nom nom during the Clemson-BC football game! :)
Woo go Tigers!

And then, there was the fair!
Oh, a fall fair in the sweet southland....

Everything is fried...or on a stick..or if you're lucky, both!

The rides are as rickety as the freak-shows are sketchy.
(We skipped out on paying 50 cents to see the 100lb rat, by the way)

And of course, the livestock exhibits always become more hands-on with you're with a boy..

(The hugest moocow I've ever seen! And she was a..clone. And just like that, my skepticism towards the meat and dairy industry continues to grow...)

And, we cannot forget the best part:
Funnellllll CAAAAAAKKKKKEEE
(Oh-so-many points I can draw from this picture as to why we are bff)

The rest of the weekend was full of church fun, more yummy food, and beautiful fall weather!

Whew, so blessed!

Off to work on this appellate brief! Love y'all!

Law Review Dinner.

Hey look I got dressed up on a Thursday!

...to go with some friends to their law review dinner.

I must clarify that I am not on law review!

As we can see from all the playing I do on the weekends I don't force myself to study!

Social life > scholastic aptitude

:)

But, apparently, I am at least fun, so I get taken to these shenanigans.

Token boy. Great date. Bless.

A beautiful fall night at the Hay house...
Having a beer with the professors...
Eating some free dinner...
Hanging with some fun friends...

Totally worth putting on a dress! :)

Happy almost weekend everyone!

My double life.

Hey, y'all!

Tonight, I'm going to write about the fact that....I lead two lives.

Unfortunately, it's not very scandalous.
(Like the case I worked on this summer regarding the guy with two wives in the same town.
Never get married in vegas, people!)

Sorry.

However, it is pretty obvious. To me at least.

And upon reflecting on the events of today, I have to use what happened to show y'all what I'm really talking about.

The fact that, while I am indeed Lizanne the law student, sometimes I think I am...

 Doreen: the domestic diva.

Don't judge!

Case in point:

This morning, I got dressed in my dress pants, heels, and cardigan; and I scattered out the door to the WFG.

I sat through civil lawsuits, answering some questions about class action. (get your act together, walmart!)

I picked up a handout from another teacher's office on modern litigation.

And then I observed juvenile court for two hours (another story for another time. yikes) with some of my peers.

Have we established the law student part?
Great!
Moving on.

After finishing my homework for tomorrow and eating my PB&J, I clearly spent the rest of my day living as a fully-fledged Doreen.

I began by going to my friend Catherine's.

Where we...

turned on the food network (hooray another friend with cable!)

and...

Sorry for the grainy pic! Feel free to buy me a Nikon DSLR anytime you'd like!

Shown without the icing.

Filled with vanilla cream.

Yes, the last batch of treats came from (gasp) a box.
Why?
Because they were on sale at the Publix.
And I had a coupon.
And they were 50 cents a box.
Sorry I'm not sorry!

Speaking of Publix, after leaving Catherine's place, I went to the gym...and to the grocery store.

From my 23-year-old observations, most roll their eyes at the thought of their weekly trip to the grocery store. (If you are a male reader: 1. Welcome! 2. Read about this "grocery store" idea here.)

Oh but, I.love.going.to.the.store.

Today's trip was the best.

One advantage of my other life (student, remember?) is that you can grace the aisles of your store midday, sans the crowds.

Ah, grocery bliss.

You can take your time when picking what flavors of soup you'd like.
Since you can get a few this week because it's finally cooler and they're buy-one-get-one and you have a coupon. Hollaaaaa.

You can ask the butcher to cut your pork loin into chops.
Because the whole loin is cheaper and Charlie will cut it up fo' free.

You can buy two packs of feta since the crazy couponers haven't cleared the shelf yet since it's only the first day of the sale.

You can chat with the sample lady...and get two samples.

You can.....

Wait...WHAT the hay??!

See?? Who LIKES going to the grocery store??!

Me. Guilty.

Oh, but she ain't done yet.

After leaving Publix, my LLBean canvas totes full of (half-priced) food items of variety and color, I came home and began washing my sheets and clothes.

Laundry day is normally Friday.

Why two days early?

Oh, just because I felt like it.

Count two: guilty.

I then danced around my apartment to the new Needtobreathe, while vacuuming, dusting, cloroxing, and febreezing anything that sat still.

Guilty.

Lastly, I popped a casserole and some cookies in the oven, and had all my lovely ladies over for Bible study.

Except less tupperware and dresse... and more Jesus and blue jeans.

Whew, a full day!

So anyways, what's my point?
Oh yea, that...

After a long day (and an even longer post, sorry y'all!)
I've determined that I love this double life.
Yes do my friends jokingly call me mom? Do I stick out when bringing muffins to writing class?
You bet ya! But I don't mind because..
I love having time to get away from the books and do other things I enjoy, and feel fortunate to do so.
Even if it is going to the gym.. and the store... and cooking... and organizing my desk!

I think sometimes culture tells us that, as a woman, you have to make a choice.
You either have to be super crazy career woman.
Or you have to sit at home with your glue gun and HGTV.

Some think the career woman thing is wrong, that us gals belong in the home.
Others, believe the idea of a domestic diva is old fashioned, only for those women without their own ambitions, or only for those featured in the glamorous portrayals on Bravo.

For me, the destined-to-be-mediator, I think either is GREAT.
Called to climb that ladder? Get it girl!
Given a heart for homemaking? Lady, that does count as an ambition. You are equally as important!

My contention is this:

Who says you can't have a law degree leading to a cool career and a clean house with yummy food and lots of guests?

I mean what if both give you joy?
I fully believe they can.

So, I think I'll choose both.

Whew- thanks y'all for putting up with the rambles!
Hope you have a great day...doing whatever brings you the most JOY!!

Love-
L (&D) ;)

You make known to me the path of life;
in your presence there is fullness of joy;
at your right hand are pleasures forevermore.
Psalm 16:11

You word were found, and I ate them,
and your words became to me a joy
and the delight of my heart,
for I am called by your name...

A Tuesday list.

Hey people!
It's a gorgeous, cool, Fall week here so far! (pic via pinterest)

1. I've been reunited with my Justins and blue jeans.
Ah, it's a beautiful thing!

2. This past weekend, I went to a sweet, fun, beautiful wedding with some even sweeter friends and family.
This time, I managed to take a few pictures!
Here is a fave.
I noticed I managed to only take pictures when JJ was in them.
Oops! :)

3. I am deactivating my facebook.
I couldn't be more excited!
Way too much junk and I never use it anyways! Whew!

4. Last night, I helped make a meal at the Ronald McDonald House downtown.
It was really fun and a huge blessing!

5. I love how my small school REALLY gets into charity.
Meal at the RMCH, canned food drive this week, habitat for humanity this weekend, annnnd AWLS bake sale for breast cancer Thursday!
I will be making something delicious and highly caloric. Will post about it later! :)

6. My football team. Wowza.
#8 in the nation, #1 in my heart.
Hate I have to miss homecoming this weekend; but I will be cheering them on in my orange!
Just like I was this past Saturday.
In a room of boy Florida fans..
who were annoyed with me flipping the channel back to a "nonscoring" game. (waddup clemson D!)

7. "Let us then approach God's throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need." Hebrews 4:16

8. I am making poppyseed chicken tonight.
Who wants to come over?
I miss having people to feed!!

9. Off to cook, read some Discovery, and lay out clothes for my Juvenile Court observations tomorrow!
I know, I lead an exciting life!

Love to each of you!

Sunday naptime.

"Many people spend a lifetime or a small fortune searching for someone who understands them. Yet I am freely available to all who call upon my name, who open their hearts to receive me as Savior. This simple act of faith is the beginning of a lifelong love story. I, the lover of your soul, understand you perfectly and love you eternally."-JC
